A law went into effect banning smoking in all enclosed public spaces in Uruguay among the toughest smoking bans worldwide and the strictest in Latin America. The penalty for businesses that allow smoking is a fine of roughly US $1,100 or a three-day closure. One opinion poll found that 70% of smokers supported the ban.

Fun Dances and Music
The most distinctive music of Uruguay is to be found in the tango and candombe. The word tango then, referred to the traditional drums and dances, as well as the places where dancing occurred. Candombe rhythms are produced by drum ensembles, known as cuerdas, which include dozens of drummers and feature three drum sizes. Candombe is an Uruguayan music and dance style originating with African slaves.
